Roland Kayser, Gründer und Geschäftsführer des Betriebes, überlässt nichts dem Zufall und lebt Oldtimer-Begeisterung mit jedem neuen Tag. „Schnell-Schnell“ ist hierbei genauso wenig angesagt, wie Mercedes oder Porsche. Vielmehr trifft man auf Fahrzeuge mit Seltenheitswert der Marken Panhard, Facel Vega, Simca, Saab aber auch Peugeot, Renault und vor allem Citroen und Volvo. Eine Wohltat für jeden Autoaffinen, dessen Herz für Extravaganz a la Citroen DS, Simca 1200S Coupé Bertone oder Renault 17 TL schlägt.

Echte Berufung statt „nine-to-five“-Job, das gefällt uns.
Mut zur Lücke, bewies der Fachmann für französische und schwedische Automobile, als er vor genau 15 Jahren seine Räumlichkeiten in den liebevoll sanierten Wiebehallen bezog. Damals noch als Meilenwerk gegründet, fand der Pilgerort für Benzininteressierte schnell Anklang bei der Berliner aber auch der internationalen Oldtimerszene. Neben den Werkstätten für deutsche, italienische und englische Fahrzeuge wurde noch ein „Franzose“ gesucht – die Chance für Roland und ein großer Schritt in eine neue Zukunft. Immerhin tauschte er seine gut dotierte Stellung in der Automobilindustrie gegen den Aufbau einer übersichtlichen Oldtimerwerkstatt ein. Mit nur einem „Schrauber“ startete die Firma „Atelier Automobile“ zum richtigen Zeitpunkt an der richtigen Stelle, denn die Szene erlebte in diesem Moment einen regelrechten Aufschwung – vom Dailycruiser bis zum Sammler.
The expert of French and Swedish autos proved his courage when he took a leap exactly 15 years ago when he moved to his facilities in the lovingly restored Wiebehallen. What he founded was a milestone at the time and quickly became a pilgrimage for auto fans in Berlin and beyond in the international classic car scene. In addition to the workshops for German, Italian, and English cars, Roland was still looking for his opportunity to take a big step into a new future. He had exchanged his well-endowed position in the automotive industry for the chance to build a really neat classic car workshop. With only one screwdriver, the company “Atelier Automobile” began at the right place at the right time, because it was just when the scene was experiencing an outright upswing, from those with recreational interests to serious collectors.
Auch wenn sich plötzlich viele neue große und kleine Herausforderungen stellten, die ein solcher Werkstattalltag mit sich bringt, würde er es immer wieder machen, bestätigt uns Roland persönlich. Selbst etwas aufzubauen und wachsen zu lassen, von der ersten Idee bis zum wirtschaftlichen Erfolg, gibt einem unvergleichbare Genugtuung und Befriedigung. Nicht umsonst heißt es: Mach‘ was du liebst, und du wirst lieben was du machst. „Sicher gibt es auch eine französische Version dieser bekannten Lebensweisheit.“, versichert uns Roland lachend. Mittlerweile kann der ehemalige Ford-Manager auf ein starkes und kompetentes Team zählen, in dem Mitarbeiter aus Deutschland, Frankreich und Polen, unterschiedlichster Fachbereiche und verschiedener Generationen, gemeinsam die Projekte von Atelier-Automobile umsetzen. Wenn das kein Grund ist, das diesjährige Firmenjubiläum gebührend zu feiern.
Even with the sudden and frequent, big and small challenges which go hand in hand with the daily operations of a workshop, Roland tells us personally that he would approach each task with resilience. Building and growing something yourself, from the first idea to economic success, provides an incomparable gratification and satisfaction. As the old saying goes: Do what you love and you will love what you do. “Surely there’s also a French version of this well-known bit of wisdom,” Roland assures with a laugh. Meanwhile, the former Ford manager can count on a strong and competent team, comprised of employees from Germany, France, and Poland made up of different departments and different generations, to come together and accomplish the projects of Atelier-Automobile. That should provide more than enough reason to celebrate this year’s company anniversary.
Auf einmal mittendrin
l’atelier – authentische Begegnungen ohne Museums-Mief
Wir genießen die Gastfreundschaft des Atelier-Teams und versuchen uns unsichtbar zu machen. Während um uns herum geschraubt, gedengelt und getüftelt wird, schweift unser Blick über allerhand traditionelle Karossen. In der gesamten Werkstatt verteilt, erblicken wir komplett sanierte oder herrlich patinierte Mobile, die man nicht allertage zu Gesicht bekommt. Vorneweg eine frühe Variante des Citroen Traction Avant, welche wegen ihres konkurrenzlos guten Fahrverhaltens bereits in den Vierziger- und Fünfziger Jahren als Gangsterlimousine bezeichnet wurden. Schließlich gab es das Gerücht, dass diese Wagen Gangstern die Flucht vor der Polizei garantierten. Während wir die seltenen Zusatzscheinwerfer einer DS betrachten, wird ein glanzschwarzer Facel Vega abgedeckt. Ein toller Anblick, der Spuren hinterlässt, während sein V8 die Situation einprägsam und mit sonorem Sound untermalt. Der HK500 ist ein ganz besonderer Augenschmaus mit Sammlerwert, da im Produktionszeitraum zwischen 1958 und 1961 lediglich 490 Fahrzeuge das Licht der großen weiten Welt erblickten. Wir verlieren uns im nostalgisch anmutenden Innenraum mit seinem einzigartigen Wurzelholzarmaturenbrett und den zahlreichen verchromten Instrumenten.
We enjoyed the hospitality of the Atelier-Team and tried to make ourselves inconspicuous. While the klings and klangs of the factory resonated all around us, our eyes swept over all sorts of traditional car bodies. Throughout the whole workshop, we observed completely renovated or beautifully coated cars that you don’t get to see every day. Just before us was an early version of the Citroen Traction Avant which, because of their unrivaled good handling, were already referred to in the forties and fifties as the “Gangster Limousine.” Apparently there was a rumor that these cars could guarantee gangsters sure getaway from the police. While we viewed the rare auxiliary headlights of a DS, a glossy black Facel Vega was uncovered. It was a great sight and left a mark, while the V8 made for a memorable experience which was accentuated with a thundering sound. The HK500 was a very special feast for the eyes with collector’s value, since in the period of production between 1958 and 1961, only 490 vehicles saw the light of day. We lost ourselves in the nostalgic-looking interior with uniqute burl wood dashboard and numerous chrome-plated instruments.
Natürlich darf im derzeitigen Bestand des „Ateliers“ ein Citroen HY Wellblech-Bus nicht fehlen. Obwohl der Foodtruck-Boom in Berlin etwas abgeflacht ist, so Thomas, der Werkstattleiter, vergeht kaum ein Monat, in dem nicht eines dieser beliebten Exemplare, frisch umgebaut oder als Basisfahrzeug, die Werkstatt verlässt. Die Umrüstung eines solchen Wellblech-Transporters zum Verkaufs- oder Food-Truck ist seit Jahren eine Spezialstrecke der Oldtimer-Profis.
Of course, in the current inventory of the “Ateliers,” a Citroen HY corrugated iron bus is not to be missed. Although the food truck boom in Berlin has somewhat plateaued, Thomas, the workshop manager hardly gets through a month without selling one of these popular specimens, either freshly rebuilt or as a base vehicle. The retrofitting of such a corrugated iron van for sale or for food truck has been a specialty of vintage car professionals for years.
