GP Ice Race 2019

Porsche Cayman GT4 Rallye // Mitsubishi Evo V // Porsche 924

Pllliiing! Wen wunderts, es kam also mal wieder alles anders…

It was actually our plan to relax in the new year. December was hectic with a short holiday season and an unexpectedly turbulent swing into the new year. It seemed as if January should be a little different. At long last, we were looking forward to the chance to refuel with some reflection and to start again with recharged batteries, or at least that’s what we had in mind. How wrong we were! It was in this short moment of well-deserved rest (which was also very unfamiliar to us) when the invitation to the GP ICE RACE fluttered into our inbox. Piiiiiiiing! And now it’s no wonder how everything changed.

Rezept & Serviervorschlag

GP ICE RACE? Was ist das? Eigentlich ganz einfach…

GP ICE RACE? What is it? Actually, the answer is simple… You set up a circuit course on an airplane tarmac in the classic Alpine suburb, Zell am See. Then you prepare the course with at least ten week’s advance to get the most professional of ice rinks, along with powerful floodlights and accurate sound. The event should include a combination of well-known players such as Porsche, Volkswagen Motorsport, Audi Tradition, and Skoda Rally Team—and, of course, Red Bull Energy is another key component. The next task to oversee is the inclusion of the most grandiose cars like the Ferry Porsche’s 550 Spyder, the mountain race car Auto Union Type C, an Alfa Romeo 8C 2900, the legendary bi-motor VW Golf 2 Pikes Peak, or the Group B Lancia Rally 037, the all-time favorite Audi S1, an Audi RS5 DTM, and the Formula E Audi e-tron FE04. As the cherry on top, the mythical 1952 “Fetzenflieger” (“Scraps of Aviators”) from Otto Mathé is brought out, and the latest 911, the 992, is hung from a helicopter directly in front of the audience, who are situated on an incline. It’s basically a colossal mix of everything from the historic to the high-tech. No car fan could resist!

Last but not least, you must garnish the winter motor sport event with celebrities like Mark Webber, Walter Röhrl, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Jochi Kleint, Richard Lietz, Marc Lieb, und Daniel Abt, just to name a few. Finally, the whole thing comes to completion with a tidy pinch of sunshine and steel blue skies at -14 degrees. With all this, you have the premiere of the grandiose race spectacle, organized by Ferdinand Porsche and Vinzenz Greger with the melodious name GP ICE RACE. It’s an experience which is truly unparalleled.

Starkes Team

This lineup got us going faster than the black ice on the interstate. We used this opportunity to say goodbye and pack our bags. We set the pedal to the metal in the direction of Zell in the tranquil Salzburg region. At the same time, we wanted to keep a promise and meet up with Richard Lietz on the way. In the trunk, we packed two brand new softgarages for the Lancer Evo V and the Porsche 924. Both the private cars are active in rally racing 4WD, or rather, the modern field, and belong to the team of Richard Lietz and Marc Lieb who are otherwise active as Porsche factory riders and just shifted to the new Cayman FT4 rally (aka, the 911 GT3 RSR) show ride. By the way, they simply just wanted to have fun today and, accordingly, just wanted to do their own thing at the start. These race sport professionals took the fitting of the softgarages into their own hands so that their sports equipment could also be protected in between events. Especially at night, temperatures dipped to minus degrees in the double digits, but as long as the vehicles were well-covered, they’d withstand the frost.

The softgarage provided no disadvantage, because just the following day, Richard showed the Subarus how the EVO hits the nail on the head. He emerged at least from the final on Saturday as the winner of his class. Unfortunately, though, we later learned that he then had an engine failure. The piston rods had been dismantled, leaving him without a chance. The Olympic idea rings true — after the race is before the race — and so we shared these motivating words with the three-time champion of the Le Mans Series of the GT2-Class. “But hey, we’re all in it for the fun,” Richard returned, as always, in his quiet, confident way.

Wilde Jagt

On top of that, the breathtaking maneuvers of ski-driving teams (30 teams who came from all over the world) were a highlight in terms of fun. They ruled! As flat-landers, that was a sight we had never seen. Driving through the curves whether at right angles like the rally cars or along great drifts is one thing, but to be pulled along as a skier just to take the punishment at the long end of the rope and shot through the course by a machine with all the bells and whistles? That is quite another league. Accordingly, the excited audience honored the fearless teams with their cheers. It was an impressive scene under the floodlights, and one which we will never forget.

Between the qualifying rounds and the daily finals, we had a chance to get to know many cool motor sport fans. Whether small hobby teams or professional crews, everyone had planned for a relaxing and sporty weekend. Again and again, the drivers or mechanics who have traveled from all parts of Europe found the time to share a few words of technical advice or simply some of their racing story gems with us. That’s exactly what it’s all about, we think, and we’re all ready to participate in the next one, even if it’s called: GP ICE RACE 2020 – COOL YOUR JETS!

Mit wintersportlichen Grüßen

With our best winter sport regards,
