Ken und Angelo sind nicht nur waschechte Inselkinder, sie stehen auch seit Kindesbeinen auf dem Brett, welches die Welt für Sie bedeutet. Schon immer galt: Surfen gehört zu Sylt, wie die Bratkartoffel zum Steinbutt oder der Don Perriot in die Sansibar – eine Gesetzmäßigkeit, die nicht zur Diskussion steht. Neben dem Wellenbezwingen war da noch die ewige Sehnsucht zum luftgekühlten Sportgerät aus Zuffenhausen. So wurde bereits im Kinderzimmer mit dem 911er Matchbox – Made in Macao – über den Teppich gedriftet, während im Hintergrund das Original durch die Straßen von Kampen, Richtung Westerwald, prasselte. „Lichte Momente, die ein Leben lang bleiben und Kindheitsträume, die erfüllt gehören!“, bestätigt uns Ken, und streicht dabei liebevoll über das Dach seines 86er G-Modells.
Ken and Angelo are genuine island kids and have been up on their surfboards ever since they could stand. It’s the world to them. As always, surfing and Sylt go together like roast potatoes in Steinbutt or Don Perriot in Sansibar—legit beyond discussion. And along with the undulating waves is also the perpetual longing for air-cooled sports equipment from Zuffenhausen. Back in the day, the 911 Matchbox (made in Macao) was drifting on the carpet of their childhood room floor, while in the background, the original clattered through the streets of Kampen towards Westerwald. “Those were the golden moments of childhood that remain a lifetime and the dreams that are now fulfilled!” Ken affirms and lovingly pets the roof of his ’86 G-model.
Was liegt also näher, beides zu verbinden? Warum nicht Freunde mit derselben Leidenschaft auf die Nordseeinsel einladen, um die Begeisterung am Brettsport und den Porsche-Klassikern zu teilen? Das Ganze in familiärer Atmosphäre, ein Treffen im Freundeskreis… vor allem keine biedere Sache, vielleicht ein paar „normal ausgeflippte Typen“ mit Surfbrett auf dem Dach und Neopren im Kofferraum – Zeit, gemeinsam die Strände der Insel zu erkunden, draußen chillen und grillen, dazu vielleicht eine Band mit handgemachter Musik.. eben eine Portion „California“, die Sylt auf jeden Fall bereichern würde. Der Rest der Geschichte ist schnell erzählt. Die Idee zum Petro Surf Festival war im Strandkorb Nummer 0911 geboren und nach der erfolgreichen Premiere in 2018 ging es auch an diesem Juli-Wochenende erneut ordentlich zur Sache. Natürlich dürfen wir da nicht fehlen.
What else connects the two? How about an invitation for friends with similar passions to take part in the spirit of board sports and Porsche classics? The whole thing has a familial atmosphere, like a meeting between a circle of friends… And above all, it must have a pair of “normal freaky types” with a surfboard on the roof and a surf suit in the trunk. With this, all one needs is time to explore the beaches of the island, to chill outside and grill, and maybe a band to provide some local music… Just a taste of California would definitely enrich Sylt. The rest of the story is simple. The idea for the Petro-Surf Festival was born in beach chair number 0911, and after the successful premiere in 2018, it picked up again this summer on a July weekend. Obviously we couldn’t miss it.
Wir folgen der Einladung der Kampener Beach Boys und sichern uns ein Plätzchen auf dem Pott Richtung Petro-Surf-Island. Die Syltfähre von Havneby nach List füllt sich langsam mit allerhand Fahrzeugblech, teilweise Kunststoff. Neben den üblichen Familienvans, den neusten SUVs und vereinzelten Bentley-Cabriolets reiht sich ein bunter Mix an klassischen Porsche-Modellen auf, die schon auf den ersten Blick alles andere als gewöhnlich sind. Ein hellblaues 356 Coupé präsentiert stolz seine Strand-Ausrüstung am Heck, zwei G-Modelle in schiefergrau reisen gemeinsam an, ein schmaler 911T in blaumetallic mit einzigartiger Patina gesellt sich zu einem dunkelgrünen Breitbau911 im „Wrangler“-RaceTrim mit Fangnetz im Seitenfenster… spätestens jetzt verspüren wir den Petro-Surf-Spirit – gefällt uns sehr. Sylt, wir kommen.
We came at the invitation of the Kampen Beach Boys and secured our place on the ship to the Petro-Surf Island. The Sylt ferry from Havneby to List filled slowly with all sorts of vehicle plates, some plastic. After the usual family vans, the latest SUVs, and an occasional Bentley convertible, came a colorful mix of classic Porsche models, and from the first glance, one could see they were anything but ordinary. A pale blue 356 Coupé proudly showcased its beach gear on the rear. Two G models in slate gray traveled together. A narrow 911T in metallic blue with unique Patina accompanied a dark green, Breitbau 911 in “Wrangler” race trim with netting in the side window. We were finally feeling the Petro-Surf spirit, and it suited us well! Sylt, we were coming for you!
„Porsche auf Sylt“ lädt unsere bunte Truppe zum ersten meet’n greet in seinen neuen Showroom. Hier empfängt uns Ken auf seine herzliche Art und lässt bereits ein paar Details zum Wochenende gucken. Der moderne Kubus aus Beton und Glas zeigt sich als tolle Kulisse für die stetig wachsende Klassik-Gemeinde, die Porsche für Porsche aufs Gelände rollt. Wirklich, ein toller Rahmen für erste Gespräche, weiteres Kennenlernen und natürlich für jede Menge Fotomotive exotischer und luftgekühlter Unikate. Das leckere Barbecue und die lauschigen Beats sorgen für allgemeines Wohlbefinden, so dass der erste Abend wie in Windeseile vergeht.
Porsche at Sylt” was the welcome call for our colorful group at the first meet’n greet in the new showroom. Ken ushered us in with his cordial manner and gave us a sneak preview at some of the details for the weekend. The modern cube made of concrete and glass served as a grand backdrop for the constantly growing classic car community for whom Porsche is rolling out the Porches. It was a great space for first conversations, to get to know each other further, and, of course, to gather a photo collection of exotic and air-cooled rarities. The delicious barbecue and the cozy rhythm made for a great atmosphere, so that the evening passed by in what seemed like no time at all.
Neuer Tag, neues Inselglück. Die WetterApp vor Augen, glauben wir es kaum. Der ewige Wind peitscht den Regen auf unsere Frontscheibe. Die Außentemperatur wird mit 14,5 Grad ermittelt. Verdammt, während wir auf den großen Parkplatz an der Buhne16 Kurs nehmen, sortieren wir im Kopf nochmal die verfügbaren Schlechtwetter-Kleidungsstücke. Ok, die 2 Badehosen im Gepäck hätten auch Kapazität für eine weitere Regenjacke darstellen können. Egal, da hinten zieht es hell auf und „ab 11 Uhr soll es ja besser werden“. Übrigens, eine Sylter Weisheit, die sich als Running-Gag entpuppt und über das Wochenende immer wieder für Erheiterung sorgt. Vom Regen gezeichnet und leicht unterkühlt machen wir uns auf, zur großen Inselausfahrt. Es bleibt festzustellen, dass die Stimmung weiterhin ungetrübt und heiter ist, selbst wenn Poseidon persönlich auf einer Springflutwelle über den Parkplatz gefegt wäre. Die Hamburger Jungs von united garages erwiesen sich, ohne festes Dach über dem Kopf, als besonders hart im nehmen – wurden aber umso mehr mit den ersten Sonnenstrahlen belohnt. Respekt!
Then came a new day and some new island luck. We could hardly believe our weather app. The brutal wind whipped the rain on our windshield, and the temperature proved to be 14.5 degrees C. As we rolled up to the big parking lot in front of stage 16, we reviewed again what poor-weather clothes we had packed for the trip. Sure, the two swimming suits in the trunk could double as a rain jacket, right? Regardless, it looked like things would lighten up in awhile, and our app reassured us that things would be better by 11am. We picked up quite a bit of Sylt wisdom like this along the way, which turned out to be the weekend’s running gag. Put off by the rain and slightly chilled, we made for the big island exit. It should be noted that the mood, at least, remained clear and cheerful, even if Poseidon himself could have been riding a tidal wave across the parking lot. The Hamburg boys from United Garages proved to be especially tough, withstanding the storm without a roof over their heads. They were all the more rewarded by the first rays of sunshine. Props!
Gegen Nachmittag steigt die große Sause im Kaamp Hüs mitten im Kampener Zentrum. Uns offenbart sich eine tolle Location, die gleichzeitig Open-Air-Showroom für unsere knapp 50 Porsche und echte Begegnungsstätte für Surfer und Petro-Fans ist. Ken und Angelo haben wirklich was auf die Beine gestellt, so bestaunen wir live die Skills des australischen Surfboard-Shapers Thomas Bexon und seiner Crew, die extra eingeflogen wurde. In den mondänen Räumlichkeiten gibt es neben kulinarischen Leckerbissen und erfrischenden Drinks, eine imposante Ausstellung renommierter Fotografen und verschiedener Labels, die Klamotten und Accessoires zeigen. The amazin‘ Stevie Gee, Künstler und Surfer in einer Person, der maßgeblich am Petro-Surf-Style beteiligt ist, zeigt ein paar seiner Arbeiten und fertigt vor Ort seine typisch farbenfrohen Grafiken an. Helge Thomsen, Motoraver und Fahrbier-Brauer, darf im Norden nicht fehlen und hat sein Longboard auf dem Dach seines 1982er 911 eingeparkt. Er moderiert neben Ken den Experience-Talk, wo unter anderem der 3-fache Le Mans Gewinner und Porsche Werksfahrer Richard Lietz und der Popart-Künstler Richard Phillips, der den diesjährigen Le Mans-RSR für Porsche optisch gestaltet hat, persönlich zu Wort kommen. Ein toller Moment, diese Atmosphäre gibt es nur auf dem Petro-Surf!
In the afternoon, a party started up at Kaamp Hüs which is in the center of Kampen. It proved to be a great location—simultaneously an open-air showroom for our nearly 50 Porches and a real meeting place for surf and classic car fans alike. Ken and Angelo really did this festival right, and we marveled at the Australian surfboard shaper Thomas Bexon and his crew who were flown in specially to show their skills live. In the chic accommodation, there were not only culinary delights and refreshing libations, but also an impressive exhibition of renowned photographers and various clothing and accessory labels. The amazin’ Stevie Gee, who is both an artist and a surfer, is a major figure in the Petro-Surf style. He displayed some of his works and made some of his signature colorful graphics on the spot. Helge Thomsen, Motoraver and Fahrbier brewer, couldn’t miss this party in the north and had his longboard perched on the roof of his 1982 911. He and Ken moderated an Experience Talk, in which, among others, three-time Le Mans champion and Porsche factory driver Richard Lietz and the designer of this year’s Le Mans RSR for Porsche, pop artist Richard Phillip, got to speak personally. It was a great moment, and this kind of atmosphere only happens at Petro-Surf!
Nach einem Abend in entspannter Festivallaune, machen wir uns am Sonntagmorgen auf den Weg zum Brandenburger Strand, dem Surfspot auf Sylt. Beim Surfcontest bleibt kein Auge und keine Surferfrisur trocken. Die jungen Wilden zeigen wie’s geht und bezwingen eine Welle nach der anderen. Ein atemberaubendes Finale rundet das Petro-Surf ab und wir sind nachhaltig beeindruckt von vielen einzigartigen Momenten und tollen Begegnungen.
The evening wrapped up with a relaxed festival mood, and on Sunday, we made our way to the Brandenburg beach which is the Sylt surf spot. At the surf competition, no eye and no surfer’s hair remained dry! The young savages showed us how it’s done and conquered one wave after another. A breathtaking finale rounded out the Petro-Surf, and we were really impressed by the many unique moments and great encounters.
Ken, Angelo, Vielen Dank für diese schöne Zeit… wir können es kaum erwarten und werden unruhig schlafen, bis zum – Petro-Surf 2020!
