Ihr kennt das, 2 Dinge zu kombinieren, die an sich schon besonders sind, potenziert den Genuss des großen Ganzen exorbitant. Eben die Schlagsahne mit Vanillearoma auf den frischen Erdbeeren. Jeder kennt seine persönliche Liste solcher Ereignisse, die einfache Formel dafür lautet 1+1=3. So, oder ähnlich, erging es uns diesen Sommer, als wir Mallorcas schönste Serpentinen erklommen, und dabei auch noch unser Oldtimer-Faible ausleben durften. Allein der Gedanke daran, lässt das knallige Azurblau des 1969er T2 Westfalia, welches so wunderbar mit dem Himmel der Baleareninsel harmonierte, für ewig unsere Lieblingslackfarbe sein. Wir gestehen – unsere Inselliebe!
You know that combining two things which are each special in themselves can increase big picture enjoyment exponentially. Whether it’s whipped cream with vanilla on top of the freshest strawberries, everyone has their own special scenario which makes up the simple formula: 1+1=3. It was just the case this summer as we were climbing Majorca’s most beautiful winding roads on which we were able to indulge in our soft spot for vintage cars. We savor just the thought of it: the bright azure blue of the 1969 T2 Westfalia which harmonized wonderfully under the Balaeric Island sky. That will always be our favorite color of coat. And with this, we confess our island love!
Wie Alles begann
Über eine Anfrage lernen wir Yves kennen, der bereits seit Jahren die Insel seine Heimat nennt, seine zweite Heimat, denn der gebürtige Pariser ist ein waschechter Aussteiger. Es gehört schon viel Mut dazu, die sichere Stellung in einem hochdotierten Unternehmen aufzugeben, Negativ- gegen Positivstress einzutauschen und den sicheren Gehalts-Scheck in den Wind zu schießen, um seinen Traum zu leben. Manchmal muss man eben doch alles auf diese global bekannten Lebensweisheiten reduzieren, die in zahlreichen Wohnzimmern als nerviges Wandtatoo zu bestaunen sind: „Don’t dream your Life, Live your dreams!“ (ein angebliches Mark Twain Zitat). So motivierte sich auch Yves, bündelte alle seine Kräfte und schrieb seinen Plan auf, um sich Schritt für Schritt seinem Ziel zu nähern. Oldtimer sollten dabei keine unwichtige Rolle spielen, denn als leidenschaftlicher Petrolhead, stand die Vermietung von Oldies zum Selberfahren auf Prio 1 seines Masterplans. Sowas gab es noch nicht auf der Insel, jedenfalls nicht bezahlbar für jedermann. Nix mit Schickimicki, es sollen Inselurlauber wie du und ich angesprochen werden, die einfach Lust haben, mit einem BMW-Cabrio aus den Achtzigern, einer zeitlos schnuckeligen Ente oder einem VW Bulli die Ferien zu verbringen. So kam es also auch zur Anschaffung des Azurblauen, eine der ersten Investitionen für Mallorcas entspanntestes Start-Up.
How it all began – After an inquiry into how to best get around Majorca, we met Yves. Though he has called the island home for many years, this native Parisian is a genuine dropout. It takes a lot of courage to give up a secure position in a prestigious company, trade negative stress for something more positive, and throw a stable salary to the wind in order to live your dream. Sometimes you have to admit that all of the universally known, worldly wisdom can be reduced to an annoying sign admired on many a living room wall: “Don’t dream your life, live your dreams!” (a quote accredited to Mark Twain). That is also how Yves was motivated to collect all his might to write out a plan and approach his goal step by step.
Vintage cars played no tiny role, because this passionate petrol head had it in his master plan to rent out the oldies and drive them on the Prio 1. Nothing like this existed on the island, at least not an option that would be widely considered affordable. But enough with the snobbery, island tourists like you and me who have the simple desire to cruise around on holiday in a BMW convertible from the 80s, a timeless and cozy Beetle, or a VW Bus needed to be considered! And so came the azure blue ride, the first investment of the young entrepreneur.
Rent a (vintage) car
Yves versteht sein Geschäft, mit „sleep under the stars next to the sea“ oder „freedom starts here“, hat er uns sofort im Sack. Der T2 mit begehrtem Westfalia-Umbau ist nicht nur eine wertstabile Sparbüchse, sondern auch voll im Trend und spricht dabei eine sehr breit gefächerte Zielgruppe an. Ob Kunst-Student, verknalltes Pärchen, Workaholic auf Hippie-Kurs oder junge Patchwork-Familie, alle stehen auf den Bulli und wollen ihn haben. So kommt es nicht von ungefähr, dass Yves gleich noch einen roten VW Camper dazu holte, der gern gegen den langweiligen Miet-Fiesta vom Airport eingetauscht werden kann.
Yves understands his trade, with slogans like “Sleep under the stars next to the sea” or “Freedom starts here,” he immediately won our hearts. His T2 with the sought-after Westfalia modification is not only a sound investment but also is trendy and appeals to a very wide target audience. From art students to smitten couples, workaholics on a hippy detour or young patchwork families, everyone loves the Bus and wants it on their next vacation. So it’s not by chance that Yves quickly added another red VW Camper to his offerings—a splendid replacement for that boring rental Fiesta that’s too often picked up at the airport.
Wer ist Mr. Fox?
Wir vertrauen dem Ortskundigen, der jedem Interessierten, die tollsten Plätzchen zwischen Andratx und Alcudia empfehlen kann und verabreden uns am Puig de Santa Magdalena, einer bekannten Anhöhe bei Inca mit Mega-Aussicht. Wir lauschen dem Wind und vernehmen bereits den Luftgekühlten, wie er sich handgeschaltet seinen Weg über die Serpentinen bis empor zum Plateau bahnt. Ein Bild für Götter (mit Hang zu Oldtimern).
Mr. Fox, so der Projektname des Campers, zeigt sich von seiner Schokoladenseite und fährt alles aus was er hat. TipTop in Schuss, wird er bereits am nächsten Tag wieder auf Reisen gehen, verrät uns der gut aufgelegte Eigner. Für uns der beste Moment für eine Anprobe der passgenauen softgarage in lichtgrau, die künftig Mr. Fox in den Pausenzeiten schützen wird.
Who is Mr.Fox? – We trusted the local expert who recommended the best and most interesting spots between Andratx and Alcudia and arranged to meet us on the well-known hill near Inca which offers a mega-view. We listened to the wind and already sensed the air cooling as we wound up the serpentine hills to the plateau on manual transmission. It’s a picture for the Gods (who, of course, have a taste for vintage autos).
The camper is aptly named Mr. Fox, and he, indeed, shows his sweet side and drives with everything he has. Everything is in top condition, and he will be traveling again the next day, the keen owner tells us. A quick break was the best time for us to try on the special 3-layer, light gray softgarage which will protect Mr. Fox during his break times in the future.
Life is a Beach!
Nach Jahren der Entbehrung, die automatisch einhergeht, wenn man einen Neustart wagt, ist Yves nun angekommen und bereut nichts. Wir erleben den ehemaligen Manager und Profi-Segler, der die großen und teuren Yachten spezieller Kunden betreute, heute als tiefentspannten und sonnengebräunten Inselbewohner, der mit einem Dauerlächeln zu 99% positiv eingestellt, seinen Tag organisiert, oder einfach mal nicht organisiert. Im „mañana-Land“, sicher keine Unmöglichkeit.
After the years of hardship that automatically come when you set off on a new adventure, Yves has arrived with no regrets. As we look at this former manager and professional sailor who used to care for the large and costly yachts of special customers, we see today a deeply relaxed and sun-tanned islander with a permanent smile tuned to 99% with his day organized or sometimes simply left up to the necessity of the moment. In the “mañana land,” everything is possible.
Mit dem Versuch, einen winzigen Teil dieser Einstellung mit nach Good Old Germany zu importieren, wird spontan entschieden: Wir kommen wieder, vielleicht schon im nächsten Jahr, um mit Yves die Pisten, entlang Mallorcas schönster Steilküste, um Santanyi zu erfahren. In an attempt to import a tiny bit of this attitude back to Good Old Germany, we made a spontaneous decision: We will come back, and perhaps already next year we will return to Yves to experience the slopes, Majorca’s most beautiful cliffs, and Santanyi. It’s sure that we will have the best choice in Majorca when it comes to the right vehicle.
